1963 World Series - Fans of the New York Yankees took their lumps in 1963 as their longtime rivals, the Dodgers, won the title by sweeping the Bronx Bombers in four games. In Gowanda, these fans gathered at Sweda’s Grille on Buffalo Street either to celebrate or mourn the Yankees’ demise that year. In this photo, Yankee fan Walt Sweda, seated, has his (and the team’s) pulse checked by Dr. Austin Carr, right, sporting a Los Angeles Dodgers hat, while fellow Dodger supporter Ed Sweda, left, gets set to deliver the knockout blow, if needed. In the middle, a somber-looking Fred Sipple tries to console his fellow Yankee fan. The cigarette-smoking moose on the wall wears a sign reading, “This moose is dead - just like the Yankees.” This was all in fun, though, as the fall classic annually drew crowds to local taverns, which became “dugouts” decked out with signs and decorations expressing support for their favorite team.
