Don Campbell's Red & White Market - 1952
Locke & Vosburg, Gowanda Plow Works, Nelson's Diner, Don Campbell's Red & White Super Market - In 1951, construction begins on a modern supermarket and 300-car parking lot at 10 Buffalo Street. Owner Don Campbell cuts the ribbon and customers are treated to the "very latest in store lighting and refrigeration equipment." Several first anniversary specials in 1952 are: three Pillsbury cake mixes for $1, Babo-three for 24 cents, Iceburg lettuce - three heads for 27 cents. The business is incorporated as Don Campbell's Super Duper in 1954 and is known as Western New York's largest independently owned supermarket. (Photo courtesy of Don Campbell.)
