Tarbox Agency - c.1957
c.1957
Tarbox Agency - Gowanda insurance agent Axel Johnson ran the Gowanda Agency before World War II in the office now occupied by Fox Motors at 39 Buffalo St. It became the Johnson-Tarbox Agency when Charles R. Tarbox joined the firm about 1946, operating out of the building at 50 West Main St. where the Markham-Bixby Agency is today. Tarbox left the firm in 1953 and started his own agency at 26 Buffalo St., the Stelzer Building. This modern office building at 25 Buffalo St. was built in 1957. Edward Palen purchased the agency and the building in 1966 when Charles Tarbox became Gowanda’s postmaster. The Palen family operated the agency until 2003 when M&W Agency purchased the insurance business.    (Photo courtesy of Phil Palen, Gowanda village historian.)
