Phoenix Lodge #262, F&AM, part 3 - While the country is in the throes of the Depression, the Phoenix Lodge experiences slow and steady growth. Many lodge members serve in World War II and in 1951, under the direction of George Crouse, the temple is completely painted and redecorated. The following year, a centennial celebration is held. Guest speaker is Ward Arbury, a notable attorney from Buffalo and grand master of New York State Masons. Approximately 350 Masons attend the celebration. Letters and telegrams of congratulations are received from President Harry Truman, Governor Thomas Dewey and numerous prominent Masons. Officers at that time are: Charles Van Etten, Worshipful Master; Meade Benson, Senior Warden; Duane Leising, Junior Warden; Dr. Henry Allen, Treasurer; George Crouse, Secretary; Lynn Rew, Chaplain; Robert Dorey, Senior Deacon; Gordon Woodcock, Junior Deacon; Leon Hines, Senior Master of Ceremonies; Lloyd Reeves, Junior Master of Ceremonies; Vernon Croker, Steward; Harold Gates, Steward; George Sherman, Marshal; Alfred Hawkins, Tiler; and Cornelius Hager, Christopher MacDonald and Harry Hager, trustees. In October 1953, Phoenix Lodge presents Dr. Ira Livermore with a 60-year Palm at a special reception. On Saturday, May 11, 2002, the lodge is celebrating its sesquicentennial, having been in chartered existence 150 years. Also being celebrated at the event being held at the Gowanda Moose Club is the Gowanda Shrine Club's 90th Anniversary. Open to the public, tickets for the 7 p.m. celebration are available until May 8 by calling Donald Campbell at 532-3394. (Photo courtesy of Phoenix Lodge #262, F&AM.) |
