Municipal Building groundbreaking - 1935
1935
Municipal Building - An important moment in Gowanda's history takes place in 1935 as the first shovelful of dirt is turned for the new Municipal Building. Attending the groundbreaking, from left, are: Trustee Paul Miller, Trustee Max Armes, Trustee/ViceMayor Charles Sage, Mayor Otto Gutekunst, PennySaver representative Mr. Stoll, Trustee George Maulbetsch, Chief of Police Gilbert Harris and contractor Joseph Donnaly. In November 1937, the new building opens. This is also the year that a Red Cross nurse reports 18 local cases of the mumps, the local tax levy is $51,500, the new reservoir/pumping station goes into operation, three landslides close Perrysburg hill, classified ads in the Gowanda News cost 25 cents and the "Green Parrot Inn" is a popular place to enjoy tea.
