Raging Cattaraugus - One of the highest levels ever recorded on Cattaraugus Creek in Gowanda occurred March 7, 1956. A rapid thaw compounded by heavy rain pushed the creek to beyond its banks in some spots. The photo at left shows the severe erosion that washed out a portion of Union Street. The photo at right shows the creek at Ben Behan’s Curve, where Commercial and South Water streets meet.    (Photos courtesy of the Henry Walgus Collection, Gowanda Historical Society.)
