1959 Snowstorm - Village highway crews clean up the downtown area after the record March 1956 snowstorm that buried Gowanda. In the photo on the left, village worker Emory Clark wields a shovel while a front-end loader carries snow away from West Main Street. The date is confirmed by the Hollywood Theater marquee that advertises the 1956 movie, “Tea and Sympathy,” which starred Deborah Kerr. The photo on the right shows Neil Smith on a handy little bulldozer in the village square. (Photos from the Robert Peggs Collection, Gowanda Area Historical Society.)
