Village Square - Here is a look at Gowanda Village Square when business is booming, storefronts offer a variety of necessity items and, despite a steady stream of traffic, no central traffic signal is visible. Elsewhere in the world in 1936, the Spanish Civil War begins and King George V of England dies. He is succeeded by his son, Edward VIII. In the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt is re-elected, a first-class stamp costs three cents, the New York Yankees win the World Series, Detroit takes the Stanley Cup, Bold Venture wins the Kentucky Derby, "Gone With the Wind," written by Margaret Mitchell, is published, "Mutiny on the Bounty" wins the Oscar, Alexis Carrel and Charles Lindbergh develop the first artificial heart, Boulder Dam is completed and the first successful helicopter flight takes place.
