The Grand Central Hotel - 1881/1916
The Grand Central Hotel - Proudly dominating the corner of East Main and Mill streets in Gowanda is the Grand Central Hotel, built in 1878 by Ansel Conger. Later on, the front of the building is enhanced by the addition of verandas/porches. In the late 1800s, the hotel is renamed "The Village Inn"' and has a sign of gilt letters on a dark green background proclaiming its new name. Gas and water connections are made in 1894, and 21 gas stoves for heating are installed. Mr. Schindler of North Collins "reopens the inn about 1899 under its original name. According to historical accounts, the Grand Central is not a very successful venture for any of its owners due to the large number of smaller hotels scattered throughout the village. In the 1920's the top two floors burn. Next week, we visit the next chapter in the life of this building ... (Photographs courtesy of the Gowanda Historical Society.)
