Winter of 1916
West Main Street, Gowanda - A line of shade trees and open front porches grace West Main Street in this 1916 view looking east from South Chapel Street. The large Colonial home at the right is the residence of Henry L. Moench, president of the Moench Tanning Company. Used as classrooms in 1929 and 1930 during reconstruction of the Center Street school, the home burns in 1936. The brick Victorian next door, built in the latter part of the 19th century by Silas Vinton, is later the home of Admiral Frank H. Bailey, chief engineer of the American fleet at the battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War. Two doors east of this home is the Woodard residence, removed when the Midland Bank is built in the mid-1960s.  (Photo courtesy of Phil Palen.)
