Herman L. Griewisch
February 7, 1931 - January 17, 2005

     Herman L. Griewisch, 73, of Silver Creek, died Jan. 17, 2005.
     Mr. Griewisch attended Silver Creek schools. He worked in maintenance repair at Rhinehart Hospital in Silver Creek from 1947 to 1950, and then served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, stationed in Fort Carson, CO, with the 134th Ordnance Co. Following active service, he spent time in the Reserves and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Griewisch retired from the New York State Thruway Authority in 1991 after 30 years in the maintenance department.
     He joined the Silver Creek Fire Department, Hook and Ladder Company in May 1949 and remained a member for 55 years.He served as fire chief in 1962, 1963 and 1964 and was past president of the Hook and Ladder Co. and the Silver Creek Firemen’s Association (1976). Mr. Griewisch was a life member of the Southwestern Firemen’s Association and the Western Firemen’s Association. He was a member of the Fire Wardens and captain of the Fire Police of the Silver Creek Fire Department. On April 30, 1998, President Clinton presented him with the Heroic Action Award for his devoted and unselfish service to his fire department and community. Mr. Griewkch also belonged to the Zion Lutheran Church and Silver Lodge No. 757 F&AM in Silver Creek, which he joined in 1965.
     His hobbies included tinkering with clocks and yard work. He was also known as a handyman who could fix just about anything.
     He was the husband of Joan A. (Samuelson) Griewisch; son of the late Raymond M. and Margaret E. (Whitaker) Griewisch; father of Patricia E. Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Jeffrey L. Griewisch and Herman L. Griewisch Jr., both of Silver Creek, and Ronald A. Griewisch of Elgin, IL; and brother of Raymond F. Griewisch and Arda Metzger, both of Silver Creek, and the late Frederick "Fritz" Griewisch, Jack and Nelson Griewisch, Carol Whitaker and Gloria Metzger: also survived by three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
     Arrangements were by the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, lnc., Silver Creek.
