William W. White, 78, of Little Valley, died Feb. 24, 2004. Mr. White graduated from Hollidaysburg, PA in 1943 and then he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946. During his time in the USMC, he received many medals and ribbons including a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon (with one star), China Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal (with one star), WWII Victory Medal and the Overseas Ribbon. He also was a sharpshooter with the M1 Rifle. Following his time in the USMC, he went to work with his father in road construction, eventually becoming an E-4 civil engineer. After working with his father, he went to work for Cattaraugus County as a refuse manager starting in 1973 until his retirement in 1985. After retiring, he worked as a civil engineer summers off and on until 1997. Mr. White was a member of the Cattaraugus County Fair Board, Little Valley Rotary Club, Little Valley American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the NRA. He was also very active in the American Chestnut Foundation of NewYork. He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, trapper and sportsman. He enjoyed camping, cooking, tying flies, sports of all kinds and music and entertainment. He was the husband of Bethany (Reed) White and the late Ruth (Rimmell) White; son of the late Howard E. and Flornell (James) White; father of Richard (Lorrie) White of Obi, Jon (Dori) White of Little Valley, and the late Robert White; and stepfather of Elizabeth and Victoria White of Little Valley; also survived by six grandchildren. Arrangements were by the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., Little Valley. |
