Carlton L. "Jake" Smith
     Carlton L. "Jake" Smith, 71, of East Otto, died Feb. 17, 2004 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville.
     Mr. Smith graduated from Cattaraugus Central School in the Class of 1950 and worked on the family farm before serving two years active duty in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of USNR R. He worked for the Village of Gowanda for 36 years, retiring as the Street Department superintendent in 1994. He served two terms as councilman on the East Otto Town Board and enjoyed the outdoors, lawn care, crossword puzzles and reading.
     He was the husband of Aurilla (Anderson) Smith of East Otto; son of the late Levi and Jessie (Cross) Smith; father of Mark L. Smith and William A. Smith, both of East Otto, Darlene A. (James) Wojtanik of Eden, and Amy L. Burley of New Port Richey, FL; and brother of Neil H. Smith of Gowanda, Duane D. Smith, Rebecca M. Smith and Margaret J. Bowen, all of East Otto, and the late James G. Smith and Althea A. Giambra; also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
     Memorials may be made to the East Otto United Methodist Church, Brooklyn Corners Free Methodist Church or William Edmunds Fire Co., all of East Otto.
     Arrangements were by the Hills Funeral Chapel, Cattaraugus.
