Countdown to the Millennium - 1996
From the Gowanda PennySaver - Dec. 27, 1999
Business leveled - In March, Crowell Auto Supply is destroyed by fire and smolders for hours afterwards. Despite its location, next to the Gowanda Fire Hall, the blaze is so intense, firefighters are unable to save the decades-old structure and contents, including apartments. Crowell's moves to West Main Street temporarily until relocating to its permanent home on Aldrich Street. Back to basics - The Routes 62 and 39 Reconstruction Project has Gowanda resembling its pioneer days as pavement and sidewalks are removed and the earth beneath sees daylight after many decades of being covered. The project, requiring several months months of heavy-duty concentration, gives the village a whole new look and a Grand Re-opening is held to celebrate its completion.
