Big industry - This photo postcard, sold at Gulley's Drug Store in Gowanda, shows the Moench Tanning complex many decades ago, when it was running at full throttle. In May 1992, the rug is pulled out from under tannery employees' feet when Brown Shoe Company, of St. Louis, MO, announces it is phasing out its Gowanda operation due to leather purchases from foreign countries.
