Countdown to the Millennium - 1983
From the Gowanda PennySaver - Sept. 20, 1999
Hollywood comes to South Dayton - The summer of 1983 is an exciting one for the residents of South Dayton as the cast of "The Natural" lands in the small community to film footage for the movie about Roy Hobbs, a baseball player. Starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close and Kim Basinger, "The Natural" is set in the '20s and '30s of smalltown, USA. Many area residents are hired as extras in the film and have the opportunity to experience Tinseltown first hand. In the photo at left, Robert Redford, right, is having a discussion with co-star Robert Duvall. In the photo at right, Redford is astride a bicycle while others prepare for a scene. In addition to the vintage train supplied for the movie, shown in the background, a carnival is also constructed to depict the time period and quaint flavor of a small town.
