In its prime - The Gowanda State Hospital Farm, on Wheater Road, is a quiet, pastoral scene during its heyday as a very functional facility. Providing a means of occupational therapy for hospital patients, area residents are stunned in 1971 when the state Department of Mental Health announces its intentions to shut it down.
