| Old iron sides - The 1889 iron bridge in the center of Gowanda is shown during its final days before its closing on July 31, 1962. Harm Stelzer, accompanied by Mayor Norman Hogle, is the last motorist to cross over the creek, driving his 1902 Oldmobile. Union Concrete and Construction Corporation of West Seneca is awarded the bid for building a new bridge and company representatives announce a pedestrian bridge is to be constructed first. Once heavy equipment arrives to demolish to existing structure, it's as if the old iron bridge has the last laugh - the construction crane breaks through the road surface and tips, halting the razing temporarily. The iron bridge bids it final farewell in August, however, as crashes to the Cattaraugus creekbed for dismantling. Work on the new wider bridge ensues. To alleviate some of the traffic problems on the detour route, a traffic light is installed at the corner of West Main and Aldrich streets.
