| Before and after - A gas main break is thought to be the cause of a series of explosions and fires that destroy the Main Street Service Station, Cheplo Oldsmobile-Cadillac Sales and Service, NYSEG offices and the dental office of Dr. Allen Cole on the last days of 1960. Sipple's Store, across from the service station, also sustains damage due to the explosions and natural gas accumulation. Many other downtown businesses are forced to evacuate their establishments and air them out as gas also builds up and threatens to explode. The service station is pictured on the left in its earlier days while the photo on the right shows the burned-out structure still smoking. Note that gasoline is 30.9 and 35.9 cents per gallon.
