Editor:
The events of Sept. 6 have again proven to me what a wonderful community we live in following another successful Good Neighhor Day.
I had a conversation the other day that I truly believe is what "Good Neighbor Day" is about. A woman told me that someone she did not know stopped her and gave her a rose and wished her a good day. She said, "It was so great having a total stranger stop me like that just to say 'Hello,' they made my day."
I told her that the thanks for that day belong to the 250 wonderful people who participated in the event, helping to pass out 3,000 roses with 3,000 smiles given and received. Mary Konert, Bonnie Konert, Dee Grainge, Jean Wyatt, Virginia Small, Elinor Wratny, Janice Wells, Scott Tyler, Maureen Stockdale, Betty Peglowski, Marilyn Elvers, Leora and Wes Rogers, Doris Layton, Frederick Jamison. Joyce Taft and Lillian Gugino came to the store on Tuesday, Sept. 5 and removed the more than 75,000 thorns that came with the 3,200 roses that were prepared for Good Neighbor Day.
Sponsors of the event were: Gowanda Lions Club, Gowanda Kiwanis Club, Gowanda Women of the Moose, Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce, Gowanda Penny Saver/News, Gowanda Federal Credit Union, Healthy Community Alliance, McDonald's of Gowanda and Hager's Flowers & Gifts.
Along with the 250 dozen roses sent out on the street to create good will in our community, we were able to send a rose to every resident of the Gowanda Nursing Home. It has been my privilege to participate in this event for the last five years and a privilege to work with those who helped.
