It’s that time again! (taxes)

by Richard Westlund

At the Feb. 6 meeting of the Collins Town Council, Town Clerk Becky Jo Summers reported that bills for Collins and Erie County taxes will be mailed out Monday, Feb. 13.Collection will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The last day to pay those taxes without penalty is Wednesday, March 15. They are paid at the town clerk’s office, which is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. The office is scheduled for additional hours on Saturday, Feb. 18 and 25, March 4 and 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. The town hall will be closed Monday, Feb. 20 for Presidents’ Day.

For more information, call the clerk’s office at 532-4887, extension 101.

Summers also reported 363 transactions in the clerk’s office for January for a total of $3,398.25, of which the towns portion was $3,280.

The council, in reply to a suggestion from the youth services program, agreed that on Fridays they would start the younger group of kids 15 minutes earlier to allow a break time between the younger and older kids’ programs. Now the younger program will run from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m., and the older group will start at 8:30 p.m. This should help alleviate congestion at the sign-in/sign-out table.

     In other matters, the council:

   •  Authorized the creation of a director of senior services PT (competitive) position in the town. This being necessary as the town has taken over the L.K Painter Center.

   •  Accepted the bid from Fred Mancuso to survey the Collins Center park property, at a cost between $500 and $1,000.

   •  Agreed to have the playground equipment bid modified and resubmitted to the council before being given out to bid.

   •  Agreed to hire the following new people for the youth center activities: Jennifer Frontuto, Earic Esperson, Sara Carter and Jessica Mercado.

   •  Appointed Scott Williams as chairman of the town parks and recreation committee and Gerry Kelly as its secretary.

   •  Authorized St. Aloysius Church of Springville to sell raffle tickets in Collins.

   •  Approved senior trip expenses of $524.80.

The next meeting of the Collins Town Council will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Collins Town Hall.
