On Friday, Aug. 1 at the VFW Little League baseball diamond, two teams from Gowanda squared off against each other in the first of eight fall baseball games to be played throughout the month of August. This Fall Ball league is the first of its kind for Gowanda Little League Baseball as it will be joined by two teams from Dunkirk as well.
In this first game, the Blue team from Gowanda defeated the Grey team, also from Gowanda, by the score of 9-5.
The Blue teams roster, which is pictured on the right,consists of (front row, left to right) Quentin Gominiak, Gavin Kennedy, Carter Benton, Denver Smith, Cole Smith and Ryan Mammoser. In back row are Manager Jeff Johnson, Walker Green, Erin Kwiatkowski, Ben Tessmer, Kevin Frederickson and Dylan Kennedy; missing from the photo is Coach Travis Gominiak.
The Grey teams roster, which is pictured on the left, consists of (front row, left to right) Matt Kruszka, Hunter Simmons, Chris Cook, Matt Christopher and Shawn Daniels. In back row are Manager Greg Kruszka, Joey Kruszka, Matt Shea, Sam Utley, Les Young, Kyle Farner and Coach Jeff Cook; missing from the photo are Jordan Young and Jennah Stelley.
In the game, the Grey team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Matt Kruszka walked and stole his way around to score the game’s first run. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Blue team answered with four of its own to take a 4-1 lead. Hits by Erin Kwiatkowski, Ben Tessmer and Dylan Kennedy highlighted the inning.
The Grey team would do its best to answer as they managed to score another run,courtesy of Matt Shea and his smart base running, this made the score 4-2.
The Blues weren’t finished as they scored two more in the bottom of the inning by Walker Green and Kevin Frederickson; this made the score 6-2. The score remained that way until the fourth when Joey Kruszka lined a double into centerfield and later scored to make the score 6-3. The score remained 6-3 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Blues scored three times to put the game away as Frederickson, Kwiatkowski and Carter Benton all scored.
Yet again, the Greys would not go away easily as they scored twice in the sixth to make the final 9-5. Les Young and Joey Kruszka both scored in the final inning for the Greys.
This is truly a milestone for the Gowanda Little League Baseball program as it looks to further develop the skills of today’s young stars.

The second round of games took place on Sunday, Aug. 3 as the Blue team from Gowanda took on Dunkirk’s White team and came away with their second win by the score of 16-9. Kevin Frederickson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and scored two more times to pace the offense. Ryan. Mammoser and Walker Green scored three times as well and Denver Smith scored his first run of the season for Gowanda.
Ben Tessmer, Walker Green and Carter Benton all pitched well for the Blues as they improved to 2-0.
In the other game, the Gowanda Greys traveled to Dunkirk and left with a tough loss, 6-4. Les Young had an inside-the-park home run and Joey Kruszka chipped in with two runs of his own.
