Chamber of Commerce
to present
‘Music Man - The Concert’

The Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a special musical program on Monday, Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Chang-Hu Park, West Main Street, Gowanda. This is in addition to the regular Thursday night music program.

“Music Man — The Concert” is coming to Gowanda thanks to the Olean Community Theatre, which is “on the road” this summer. There is no charge for the show.

The OCT is presenting this as a way of expanding its audience base and to let folks know about this really good theatre company in the Southern Tier.

Performing since 1979, this is the first time they are trying a touring musical. Gowanda is one of six lucky communities who will enjoy such tunes as “Seventy-six Trombones” as this 1-1/2 hour show will present the music that follows the story.

This turn-of-the-century musical by Meredith Wilson has something in it for everyone from rousing chorus numbers to nostalgic barbershop harmonies to beautiful and heart-touching love songs.

This affectionate paean to Smalltown, USA in a bygone era, follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize - this despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marion, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by the end of the show.

This special performance, which includes props, staging and costumes as well as a small combo, is directed by Minna Badanes with Ken Roberts as the technical director. Gowanda’s lovely gazebo in Chang-Hu Park will provide the perfect setting for the show.

The Music in the Park Concert series is presented every Thursday night during July and August. All concerts begin at 6:30 p. m. The Chamber will be selling hot dogs, ice cream and soft drinks or attendees are welcome to bring a picnic supper. It is a good idea to bring lawn chairs, too.

“Music Man - The Concert” will be presented Monday night, Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. This is in addition to the regular Thursday night performance featuring 23 Skidoo that will be held on Aug. 14.
