The Wizard of Oz visits Versailles

by Heather Keller

On Feb. 19, the Versailles Project Playground Committee hosted a day of family fun. The event was called “To Oz,” and the children had a wonderful time. The Versailles Community Hall was decorated, complete with a yellow brick road. Members of the committee dressed in incredibly elaborate costumes and even Toto was present.

Visitors came from as far as Buffalo to enjoy the afternoon. After some food and fun, the Wizard of Oz was aired on an extra-large screen to be enjoyed by young and old alike. Kids from 1 to 100 never seem to tire of this timeless tale.

The Versailles Project Playground Committee began in 2003 when some concerned residents decided that the area playground, being beyond repair, needed to be replaced. They started raising money with a pop can drive, but soon realized they would need far more money to reach their goal of $23,000.

The committee has hosted many similar events since July of 2004. They’ve had much success and have raised about $13,000 thus far.

Committee President Kristen Wheeler said, “It’s great to enjoy a family friendly afternoon, without having to travel a great distance.” The children attending the event seemed to thoroughly enjoy every moment.

Wheeler also said that the committee is considering the possibility of selling memorial bricks, which would then be installed in the new playground.

Committee member and President of the Versailles Women’s Auxiliary Irene Jimerson said, “We have a very close community here: we are like family, and we have many events here every year.” This writer felt at home and very welcome in Versailles.

The fees for admission and refreshments were minimal, and the atmosphere. was so warm and inviting. Watch for the next Versailles Project Playground event, as it will again be publicized in the Gowanda PennySaver/News. Come on out to Versailles and enjoy a great afternoon while supporting a great cause.
