Getting A Boost - The 50-Plus Senior Program’s transition from a program of the L.K. Painter Center to one under the auspices of the Town of Collins was made easier with the help of a generous grant from Assemblyman Jack Quinn, second from right, who is shown presenting a large replica of the check for $8,500 to Town Supervisor Kenneth Martin, right. Also pictured are Gary Sprague, president of the Painter Center Board of Directors, and Joan R. Byrne, 50-Plus Senior Program director.

Transition to town auspices a success

The 50-Plus Senior Program has successfully transitioned from the L.K. Painter Community Center Board of Directors to one under the auspices of the Town of Collins. The changeover became a reality at the beginning of 2006.

Announcement of the change was made by Collins Town Supervisor Kenneth Martin, who said that the town board was pleased to be able to provide the assistance needed to keep this senior program viable in Collins.

“With the cooperation of the Painter Center Board and the Healthy Community Alliance, the town has taken over ownership of the L.K. Painter Community Center on Main Street. The building will continue to house the town’s Youth Center and now its newest venture for seniors,” Martin said. “It also will continue to be known as the L.K. Painter Community Center in honor of the Rev. LK. Painter, an early Quaker minister who helped in the town’s development,” Martin concluded.

“The transition has been a smooth one and seniors in the tri-county area are once again participating in the almost daily abbreviated senior programming offered at the L.K. Painter Community Center,” Joan R. Byrne, senior program coordinator, said.

“We are extremely pleased that the Town of Collins has taken us under its wing and that area seniors still have a familiar place to gather and to continue enjoying,” she added.

The 50-Plus Seniors shall continue to offer many of the same programs and will be aiming toward developing new activities in the future. The one change that seniors traveling with the 50-Plus Seniors will notice is the changes in payment for trips and where the check is to be sent.

Checks are to be made payable to Town of Collins and mailed to Collins Town Hall, Attention Joan Byrne, P.O. Box 420, Collins, NY 14034. Checks for AARP Driving Courses will continue to be made payable to AARP but will be sent to the above Collins Town Hall address. Payment also can be made to Byrne at the Center during programming hours.

For information on the senior program, call Byrne at 532-2006, extension 21 or at her home, 532-2507.
