Help St. Joe’s help New Orleans

     A group of young people from St. Joseph’s Church in Gowanda is going to New Orleans the third week in February to help the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. They are collecting items and monetary donations to take with them on their trip.

     While in New Orleans, the group will assist a church, St. Alphonsus, and the people of the community, The church is in southern New Orleans and was heavily hit by Hurricane Katrina. The young people will be helping a senior citizens program as well as cleaning up some of the damage done by the hurricane.

     The items they collect here in Western New York will be taken to New Orleans them. The food and blankets will go to people in the community who need them. The school supplies will be taken to the church’s school that will be opening soon. The group of young people has contacted the pastor of St. Alphonsus, Fr. Greg Schmitt, and he is excited to have this group coming to help revive his parish and community.

     The group will be taking blankets to distribute while in New Orleans. People can donate blankets and drop them off at St. Joseph’s rectory.

     Food and other items being collected are: canned food, school supplies, and monetary donations. Items can be dropped off at St. Joseph’s rectory in Gowanda anytime before Feb. 18. All donations are tax deductible and receipts are available.
