Vicki Toy is seeking election to a two-year term as trustee for the Village of Gowanda. The election will be held on March 15 from noon to 9 p.m.
Toy grew up in Tonawanda and as an adult lived in a variety of communities throughout her lifetime. But she found a home in Gowanda.
Toy came to Gowanda in 1997 wanting to live here with her three children due to the opportunity it provided, and the great potential of the community. All three of her children, John, Jenny and Jay Frantz, are graduates of the Gowanda school system and Jay was Class of 2003 valedictorian.
A long-time dedicated employee at Olympia Family Restaurant, Toy states, "I love this small community with its charm and wonderful history.”
As a fiscal Conservative running for trustee, her goals are to support the overall progress in projects continuing to improve the appearance and historical nature of Gowanda. "I will give full support to the police and fire departments in these changing times,” she says.
A long-time advocate of business and economic development, Toy says she would seek to add “economic development” to the meeting agenda, hoping to keep urgent issues of economic health at the forefront of every meeting. Toy adds that she would listen to the concerns of the citizens, addressing each situation. "I will do my best to solve any issues that may arise. The citizens need to know that their voices will be heard.”
Toy states she would also like to see improvements to St. John Park as well as growth in the recreation programs providing the children of Gowanda with more healthy and constructive things to do. She believes that such measures can be achieved using outside sources of funding that would result in retaining more of the youth after graduation from high school and college. This would not only attempt to retain youth, but to also attract new residents to the Village of Gowanda, according to Toy.
“Such goals are feasible but only if a healthy hospital facility remains,” she comments. "I would promote a formal tie between Tri-County Hospital and the Village of Gowanda by creating a liaison between the agencies and include a quarterly update to the village board on the status of Tn-County.” Using federal, state and county grant funding, "I would encourage more businesses to come here, which would give more opportunities for the people of Gowanda to shop and do business right here in the village. I would also work with the mayor and the other trustees in holding down costs while finding new sources of revenue such as grants to help pay for projects that will improve life for everyone in the Village of Gowanda.”
Toy lives on Jamestown Street with her husband, Charlie.
