This week in Gowanda Football History

by Mark Benton

In September of 1967, long-time GCS wrestling coach Ernest Bareham takes over the reins of the football program replacing Howard Hillis, who had retired from coaching following a 27-year career.

In the Panthers’ first game under Bareham, Gowanda defeats visiting Eisenhower (PA) 13-7. Junior quarterback George Nelson throws a touchdown pass to tight-end Mike Edwards.

Later in the season, Gowanda upsets Fredonia in the “Orange Bowl” as Ron Fort returns an interception 93 yards for a touchdown.

Team captain Tim Bobsein is Gowanda’s lone first-team all-star selection.
