Collins public hearing set for grant money

by Richard Westlund

A public hearing has been set for Monday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Collins Town Hall to give residents input on what projects the town ought to consider in its application for Community Development Block Grant monies.

A second topic for public input is the request for an extension to the lighting district on Mill Stieet in Collins Center. This will allow for a new street light as a safety measure at a point where small children catch the school bus.

Town Supervisor Ken Martin reported that state Senator Dale Volker has taken steps in an effort to reverse or reform the state’s grab at local speeding fines. The state’s new approach is to not allow localities to plead down speeding tickets to lesser violations and thereby keeping some of the fine imposed for local treasuries. This means that localities cannot even recoup the expenses of enforcing speed, which involves not only speed monitoring but also court and clerical costs.

     In other matters, the board:

   •  Accepted the bid from Industrial Appraisal for $5,985 for making a complete inventory appraisal of the town’s fixed assets.
   •  Agreed to purchase tires, brakes and an auto-cover for the 1995 Mack truck used at the transfer station for a total of $1,284.16.

The next regular meeting of the Collins Town Board will be held on Monday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Collins Town Hall.
