Property clean-up still desired in Collins Center

by Richard Westlund

Dan Sion, of Mill Street in Collins Center, addressed the Collins Town Board asking what the status is of the Rogers property in Collins Center. Rogers has been fined and even spent a short time in jail for her negligence and failure to maintain a presentable yard. Sion said that the action taken of fining and jail time has done nothing to remedy the situation, as the yard is still a mess.

Town Attorney Jim Musacchio told him that to launch a new effort toward getting it cleaned up, he should make a current complaint with Gene Degman, the town’s building inspector.

Highway Superintendent Joe Gernatt reported that road chipping is completed, and they are doing a lot of mowing now. He also reported finding a leak in the salt storage barn roof, which will cost an estimated $1,300 to repair with steel roofing. He also said that the leak under Route 39 by the tracks in Collins has apparently not been completely fixed, and it will receive more attention right after Labor Day.

Town Clerk Becky Jo Summers reported that hunting licenses are now on sale, and there have been quite a few sold already. She also said that the increase in the sale of dog licenses is continuing, as a result of the dog census that has begun.

Town Attorney Musacchio reported that as soon as he gets an estimate from Niagara Mohawk on the cost of installing a new street light on Mill Street in Collins Center, they could proceed with the petition to get the project moving.

     In other matters, the board:

   •  Approved raising the rent payment to the L.K. Painter Center to $2,000 per month effective Aug. 1.
   •  Allotted a sum, not to exceed $1,400, for steel to repair the roof of the salt barn.
   •  Agreed to a settlement with NYSEG for payment of $1,000 to Collins for any street lighting overcharges up to July 2000. This is to be split with Computel Consultants for their efforts in acquiring the refund.
   •  Allotted $350 to cover tuition and expenses for Dog Control Officer Carol Kurdziel to attend a seminar on chemical capture training in October. The town already has the equipment, but training to use it is required.
   •  Approved a resolution to pay $4,950 to Valley Fab from the highway capital fund.

The next regular meeting of the Collins Town Board will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Collins Town Hall.
