St. Joe’s competes in Diocesan championship

The St. Joseph School Girls’ Basketball team started their season with a 6-0 record, then had some bad bounces, resulting in losing four games by just one point. By the end of the regular season, the girls’ team was fifth in the league, only one win away from being second in the standings.

Culminating the basketball season was an invitation to the Western New York Girls Tournament where the top 36 Catholic schools competed. In the first round, the team from Gowanda defeated Blessed Sacrament; St. Rose of Lima was defeated in the second round; and St. Joe’s were victorious over Southtowns Catholic in the third round, advancing them to the championship game.

Tipping off against St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joe’s team played a close first half, down by only one point at halftime.

St. Vincent’s outscored St. Joe’s in the third quarter and Gowanda was unable to make up the difference.

Despite playing without starters at times and racking up injuries, St. Joe’s finished with a final record of 19-13, which includes tournament play.

Leading scorers for the season were Tori Rebmann with 293 points, Delaney Kiernan with 147 points and Megan Holt with 141 points.

The great supporting cast from St. Joe’s includes Laura Stang, Katie Schneider, Kim Moesch, Andrea Andolsek, Morgan Valone and Madison Kiernan.
