Empire Girls’ State

     American Legion Auxiliary Post #409 is pleased to announce that Bryna Moritz has been selected as Empire Girls’ State representative for 2004.

     Bryna is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Moritz of Gowanda. She has been involved in various activities at Gowanda Central School including cheerleading, chorus and the honor society. She has been a class officer, including the position of president. She has been listed in the Who’s Who Among American Students for the last three years, and has been a volunteer to coach the Pee Wee Jet Cheerleaders for two years. Bryna is an accomplished participant in Karate, having attained the level of Brown belt.

     Calyna Johnson is the alternate selection this year. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson of South Dayton.

     Calyna has been involved in many activities at Gowanda Central, including band and chorus. She has been an all-county musician and a member of the jazz band and marimba band. Other activities include the honor society and SADD, where she served as secretary. Volunteer community activities have also been important to Calyna. She has been a member and officer of the 4-H Club and has spent time working at the playground. She also makes seasonal contributions such as caroling and baking cookies to help local organizations.

     Empire Girls’ State is a non-partisan Americanism program, an exercise in the political process of forming a democratic society. It prepares today’s young women to be knowledgeable, active participants and leaders in tomorrow’s democracy.

     The 2004 Empire Girls’ State session for 2004 will be held at SUNY Brockport from June 25 through July 1.
