Shannon Chmielewski

Bucks for a Bike — Gowanda Middle School student Shannon Chmielewski sits atop the mountain bike she won in the Fitness Bucks Auction drawing. With the winner is GMS physical education teacher Andrea Dobony, left, and Rod Utley.

Forty-one Gowanda fifth- and sixth-grade students participated in the Fit & Fun Fitness Bucks Auction which promotes increased physical activity.

Over 54,800 minutes of physical activity were recorded during the three-week program, averaging 7.4 hours a week per student.

Twenty-five of the 41 students who participated reported an increase in physical activity.

Students earned one Fitness Buck for every 10 minutes of physical activity they engaged in during the three-week program. At the end of three weeks, the students used their accumulated bucks to bit on a variety of fitness and sports equipment at a silent auction. Auction items included basketballs, bike helmets, protective gear, volleyballs, roller blades, ice skates, baseball mitts, and much more.

All participants were eligible for the mountain bike drawing. The winner was Shannon Chmielewski.

Fit & Fun was developed by the Healthy Community Alliance under Gowanda Central School’s Childhood Diabetes Prevention grant awarded by the New York State Department of Health. The goal of the auction activity is to educate students about the importance of engaging in daily physical activity as recommended by the Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health promotion. The auction prizes and other incentives encourage participation and add excitement to the event.
