Pee Wee Packers win SuperbowlOn Sunday, Oct. 26, the 9-0 No. 1 seeded Gowanda Pee Wee Packers traveled to EIlicottville to play the 7-2 Randolph Raiders in the Class A Superbowl. Both teams came out fired up. With the rain falling and the field covered in mud, footing was bad and both defenses came out taking control of the game until early in the second quarter when the Raiders pinned the Packers back on their own 8-yard line. Out of nowhere Christian VanNote, behind a fired-up offensive line and lead blocking, broke free on a 92-yard touchdown run only to have it called back on an illegal formation penalty. After the penalty and a fumble, the Packers were on their own 2-yard line and had a fake punt go bad. The Packers held the much bigger offense of the Raiders, but on third down it was just too much and, for the first time in the 2003 season, the Packers found themselves trailing in a football game with the score 7-0. The Packers never gave up and the score remained the same throughout the second quarter. The teams went to halftime with the Raiders leading 7-0. In the third quarter, the Packers were determined to win, overpowering the much bigger Raiders. Pushing them back, the Packers' offense got the ball back, driving down the field when, on third and 6 inches, penalties again hurt the Packers. With an offsides penalty, the Packers now were at third and 5 yards. The Raiders' defense was able to hold the Packers from scoring. The Raiders took over on their own 5-yard line. In a strategy move, the Raiders ran back and took a safety. The score was 7-2. The Packers got the ball on the 50-yard line and the Raiders needed to hold them when Packer Christian VanNote, with the help of great blocking, broke free again for a 50-yard touchdown making the score 9-7. With the fourth quarter still to play, the Packers were fired up and took the game over, running out the clock and improving their record to 10-0 and attaining Class A Superbowl Champs. The offense was led by Christian VanNote with 80 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown, and passing for one completion for 12 yards. Cody Cook had 41 yards on eight carries, one extra point and one reception for 12 yards. Colyn Stiles had 9 yards on five carries with a big first down run at the end of the fourth quarter. Tommy Bartlett turned in a great effort with six carries. The defense was led by Christian VanNote with 10 tackles and three assists. Bob Stark had five tackles and a blocked punt. Cody Cook added four tackles and a fumble recovery. Tommy Bartlett, Nick Huffman and Dakota Jimerson had three tackles each. Dakota Jimerson also had a fumble recovery, Colyn Stiles and John O'Brien had two tackles each and multiple assists. Jeremy Metzger had one fumble recovery, while Eric Darling, Jake Richter and Kenny Quiter each had multiple assists.
