Rainmobile - The Versailles Community Picnic wasn't a total washout, as Joel Nue, first assistant chief, and Irene Jimerson, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, get a chance to display an ATV that is being raffled by the Versailles Fire Department. The sign was made by Kristen Wheeler.

Storm short circuits part of Versailles annual picnic

"Rain didn't dampen the spirits of the Versailles community," is the thought First Assistant Chief Joel Nue of the Versailles Fire Company suggested regarding this year's annual community picnic.

Although stormy weather cancelled the parade and activities on The Commons, picnic goers kept the festivities alive in the community hall. There were more than enough dishes to pass and plenty of games to entertain the children. A dessert contest and 50/50 raffle were also held.

According to Nue, it may have been lucky that the parade was rained out, as the department was called to handle downed power lines in West Perrysburg during the time it would have taken place.

"Half the parade went up the hill for the power lines!" Nue said.

Irene Jimerson, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, attributes the success of the picnic to the community's interest in the event, but notes that it is not merely restricted to those in the village. "It's for everyone who has roots in Versailles," Jimerson said.

The Versailles Community Picnic is organized by the Versailles Fire Company and the Ladies Auxiliary. It is held each year on the last Sunday of July.

Dessert Contest winners: Verna Sprague, first, raspberry pie; Kristen Wheeler, second, chopped apple cake; and Doris Latona, third, pecan pie.
