Fourth Heritage Tree named in Gowanda
Fourth Heritage Tree named in Gowanda

The Village of Gowanda Tree Committee has identified Heritage Tree #4 in the village, a Horsechestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) located at 64 Broadway St. Aesculus is the ancient name for some European nut-bearing tree and hippocastanum is the Latin common name for the horsechestnut tree, from the Greek hippos, horse, and kastanon, chestnut.
This specific tree was selected to be a Heritage Tree due to its species, distinctive size, and shape. It has been reviewed by Erie County Urban Forester Dave Paradowski.
The Horsechestnut, not native to this area, was introduced from the Balkan Peninsula and adjacent Asia. The Horsechestnut, quite urban tolerant, is considered to be an ornamental tree. Its fruit is a large fleshy nut that is considered poisonous. Turks reportedly used the seeds to concoct a remedy given to horses suffering from cough, therefore the common and Latin species names.
The wood is light and soft. It is used for paper pulp, woodenware and slack cooperage.
Heritage Trees are so designated based on any of several criteria: a) distinctive size or specie, b) ecceptional beauty, c) functional relationship to a natural resource, d) documented association with a historical figure, property, or significant historical event, or e) an exemplary representation of species' characteristics.      Several other trees, already nominated, will be designated shortly. Plans are also being developed for a Gowanda Heritage Tree Walking Tour.
Anyone can nominate a tree to be designated as a Heritage Tree. Contact the Tree Committee by leaving a message at the village office. Selections will be determined by the Tree Commiittee.
